Planning a trip to visit family and trying to figure out the best route. I want to bring a firearm with me, but going through New York makes things a bit complicated. Taking the long way around adds a ton of drive time, and I'm not sure it's worth it. I've heard mixed things about how to handle this—some say it's better to just avoid NY altogether, while others have managed to navigate the laws there without too much hassle. Curious if anyone's faced this before and what you ended up doing. I'm open to any suggestions or tips that could make this a smoother trip.

I'd avoid New York completely. I fall under HR218, and still uncomfortable packing in that state.

I hear ya, just adding so much time to go around, but beats the alternative if something were to happen.

Obviously you are driving? Are you Carry permitted? If so, check this link
https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/resources/ccw_reciprocity_map/

I assume you want protection for the trip? otherwise ship it to an FFL in the destination state, or leave it home in the safe.
If not, plan your trip VERY carefully. plenty of resources available...USCCA, NRA, etc...

I've travelled to Utah many times armed as I have both CA an AZ permits, which affords me safe travel through Nevada.

NY like CA does not allow any reciprocal carry. NY was so strict you had to have a CCW to even own a handgun. We have that and a NYC law to thank for the Bruen decision

The HR218 would have been ok. My NY CO son's is good in CA from what he tells me

I used to have A NYCCW and I could not return to NY and CC even with my Lifetime Hunting License
