Considering the current ammo options and the latest parts, is there still any advantage for a 16" barrel when using a carbine-length gas system?

yes. velocity. teh better question is why use a carbine length gas system, given what we know about midlengths and how widely available the parts are?

I ran carbine gas for years mostly because it was just what everyone had. It got the job done, sure but after I finally tried a mid-length on a 16-inch barrel, things just felt smoother, it's tough to go back once you get used to that.

A couple seasons back I ran a 16-inch carbine gas alongside a mid-length at a dusty range day and the carbine still felt snappier in close drills, though less forgiving over strings.

I still believe there's a good place for it, if you're trying to keep things straightforward. Not every single thing needs to be pushed to its absolute limit to perform just fine, you know.
