I'm trying to figure out whether carbine gas systems are outdated for 16" barrels or if mid-length setups are just the latest trend. Which one is actually better?
alan this is looong been decided. THere is 0 argument for a carbine length system on a bbl longer than about 12"
The port pressure is super high, it accelerates the bolt faster, puts more wear on internals and beats up brass. Run them longer, let pressure drop and be happy. We don't need all that gas to run a modern ar.
Carbine gas systems are still great. People act like mid-length fixed everything but a well-ported carbine setup runs hard and dirty without complaining. I care about that more than a little less recoil.
I wouldn't exactly call them bad, they're just not my first choice anymore. A mid-length option seems to find a better sweet spot for most of the setups I've used.
