I’m currently exploring the ins and outs of "featureless" builds and fixed mag solutions. It’s a bit of a puzzle, but I’m still getting to the range every weekend I can. I’m here to learn about the latest CA-legal innovations and to experience life in the free states.
There is another style that allows the upper to lift up so the mag will drop out, some like those. We used to need a bullet button, but that has since gone by the way side, as I understand it.
@Havasu help me out, I asked you about this previously.
I don't like those solutions where you need to open the upper to remove the mag.
My first suggestion is only use an AR style rifle that believe is legal, because you may need to explain to the court why that is at some point.
My second suggestion is don't use AR rifles until all of this BS is resolved.
The other area that is grey, is a pistol brace. I own several of them, and if you're a member of 2AF or FPC, possibly GOA, you could be covered until the case is resolved. This is only until the case is resolved, and it is not clear how CA will look at the pistol brace, as we can't have NFA items, and we're still waiting to find out what the zero $ tax stamp means from the current DOJ.
That said, I'm not using any AR rifles, as I just don't believe it's worth the trouble it could impose on you, but it's really unclear if a standard configured AR is legal in CA or not. If this state worried half as much about how much money the Governor is stealing from us, that they do to prevent us from using an AR 15/10, it would be a better state. I will lastly add, the ATF has their own interpretation of what a pistol brace is, and that may differ from what the DOJ or SCOTUS believe. For this reason I choose to avoid them until it's much clearer.
There is no reason that my featureless Thordson stock can't use be used with a 16" barrel, just that I have bolt actions to use for hunting instead. I will say that the 8.6 blackout is an amazing cartridge at subsonic...I have some Gorilla 285 grain expanding subsonic bullets that expand to about 3". This is basically like a blender going through game. AFAIK, Kevin Brittingham, has taken just about every dangerous game, (maybe sans Elephant) in Africa. Multiple Cape Buffaloes, plains game, possibly a Giraffe, but big game. The size of the bullet is BIG, especially when it flowers open.
EDIT:
Here's an 8.6 blackout expanded out, I found on the web. I think this is a 342 grain projectile, I have some 285 grain of the same construction. The question is, who much do we really need in CA?
