What do you think about creating a map?

I've often pondered about having a game map, one that would show what game are in specific regions of California. An example would be the hills east of Mono Lake where Bighorn Sheep live, or in the north part of the state where we have Elk on the bottom of the Cascades, or Mules east of I-5, Bears in the Sierras, Pigs in Monterey, SLO, etc...

I'm not sure what software could be used for such a map, that could be edited easily as we update it?

Anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish this?

You would have to have reporting to compile it .

Simple example Elk. San Louis Reservoir, Livermore, Willits, Laytonville , Elk campground, Orick, Elk Meadow, Crescent City, Fort Dick. That’s where I see them in my travels. Then you would have to do subspecies Tule or Rosevelt.

And if you don’t think there are any in Livermore, this is Calavaras Rd in Sunol all on SF watershed property.

I know you said you were local to here at one time.

OMG, those are cows! I didn't realize they were out in Calaveras...is that on public land?

I haven't figured that part out yet, but we would need to somehow have a map that we could modify to show where the specific game is. As an example, I didn't realize there were cow elk out in Calaveras. So, that's a good piece of info to add.

We need something that would show us a map, and somehow label the areas. I don't know if GIMP would work or not, but that's what I use on Linux for photo manipulation. I think we need to start somewhere. I need to head down to San Jose tomorrow, but when I get back I will try to figure something out. I know of 2 places in Lake County, the north section of Pillsbury, and the north section of Blue Lakes. The one gotcha with elk is you need to get a draw, but that would be true of Bighorn Sheep east of Mono Lake also. Yosemite is some of the most beautiful country in California, but Mono Lake is outside of Yosemite itself, AFAIK.

Between EB parks and San Fran Watershed that land is pretty locked up. A few old time private hunting camps on the fire roads between Calavaras and Mines Rd but you need a key for the gates.
I have seen a bull walking down the 84 between the old Nuke plant and 680.
About 7-8yrs ago they had a draw for the area, a whole 1 permit.

They probably had like 10,000 people submit for the single draw! LOL

What's wtih the SF Watershed? Is that protected? There's a lot of BLM and public land in California. BLM is all good to go for hunting. Some zones have such an abundance, tags are plentiful over the counter. Deer tags are like that in North A zone.

I'm heading down to south bay tomorrow, with hopes of getting a Ford started...

Every place on a road, it is posted by the water shed district. They don’t have signs on my common border with them, but it is fenced by them.
Park posted signs by my gates , Park Boundary Private Property. My gates were there before park owned it.
I have one of the gate keys to the fire roads. It gives me a couple ways out in an emergency

What do you mean by that?

I'm not sure I want to eliminate it, it's one of the few lands we can know for certain we can hunt on, and I think we need to play that into our favor more. The law states that hunting is legal on BLM land as long as you're 150 yards from the road, and don't shoot across the road.

As it happens, the Black Forest sits between Buckingham Park and Mount Konocti, as Soda Bay Rd. runs along there. From Soda Bay Rd. to Konocti, it's legal to shoot as long as you don't shoot across the road, so into the mountain direction is legal. As such I will need to try that next year, as I didn't realize it was BLM land, a friend pointed that out.

Although, private property is the best as fish and wildlife can't actually set foot on that land to make sure you have a tag and/or if the game has been eating any of your crops (a broad term, IMO). I'm pretty certain there's some corruption in California in regard to poaching game on private land. There is also a lot of large private land areas in California.

If you were to exterminate the land, what would you do to it? Would you make it public land? Because it's the public land that some of the current bills are trying to sell. Should the state sell it to legal residents? I hadn't thought about that aspect, to be honest. Everything in California is a money grab, when it comes to real estate... 🤔
