So, I was at a local gun store recently and they had .22LR on sale for $5.00 a box. So I thought what the heck I'd love to go do a little plinking and thought I'd pick up a box. Well I couldn't believe what happened next. See below;

Box of .22 $5.00
Sales tax on $5 .43 8.75%
Firearm tax 11% .55 11.00%
New state increase gun safety fee 5.00

Grand total for 1 $5.00 box of .22 $10.98

$5.98 in fees add up to more then the cost of the box of .22

And before you can do that you need to do or have this;

To buy ammunition in California in 2025, you will need a valid California driver's license or California identification card, or a military ID. If your ID says "Federal limits apply", you will also need to provide a passport or passport card. Additionally, you will need to pass a background check, which requires a valid California ID or driver's license. Starting July 1, 2025, the background check fee will increase to $5 per transaction.

This is really getting out or control.

Yes it is. I was also told if you don't have any firearms matching the purchased ammo, they won't sell it to you.
Talk about GOVERNMENT OVERREACH!

Yeah they tried that to get that one in but too many people own guns from long ago that nobody knows about, but you can buy whatever you want and no limit on quantity.....get all you want.

Have to buy in bulk now and possibly from out of state. Good deals on ammoseek especially if you can get free shipping. Still have to pay the fees though.

How does an out of state ammo supplier file the Kalifornia required paperwork?

Don't believe they have to. It's shipped to an FFL here local. You pay the FFL the CA fees. You will need the Real ID. Last couple of times I did (last year) the FFL sometimes charged their personal fee ($20/1000 rounds), and other times didn't but pretty sure they will have to charge the 11% excise tax now. The $5 is a moot point if you're buying bulk.

The FFL also did not charge sales tax so if you buy from FL or TX you won't get hit with sales tax. There is no issue buying from out of state vendors and most do ship to CA. Really depends on what local FFL you use for the transfer.

Has to be shipped to a CA licensed Ammo vendor. Then the licensed ammo vendor does the rest. There are exceptions for FFL03 w/COE.

I thought that too. I thought you being former LEO would know.

I passed the background check for my .223 rifle.
"You want any ammo for that". Ok 200rds.
"Anything else?" Got any 12g sabots? Yep, how many.
I did purchase a 12g under a former address. But there was no background check done on my add on purchase.
Now, I wouldn't go in and try to buy .44mag for a rifle I legally brought in 2010 to the state, because I didn't need to "declare" it.
Tracking exists, but I don't think they are quite there yet. I expect it to be soon improved upon.

Yeah, I purchased major bulk a few years back, knowing I could easily shoot 1000 rounds a week. I honestly think im good for the next 5-10 years, based on my limited plinking currently.

I buy all mine from OOS(out-of-state) in 1K increments. My FFL dings me $15 for the first 1K, then $5/1K after. still winds up cheaper per round than buying in-state. Always order enough to get free shipping. Never buy from anyone that doesn't do free shipping.
