Shipping Rifle to Gunsmith?

Does anyone know of any problems with shipping a barreled action (no stock, sights, or trigger) along with 2 barrel blanks to a gunsmith in TX? As I understand the current regs, I can ship via USPS to an FFL gunsmith out of state without issue.

Just checking in to see what the community says...

Yes, that is legal, to ship USPS to an FFL in another state, AFAIK. There is no choice coming back to CA, it *HAS* to go to an FFL, AFAIK.

I talked to Clark Custon Guns in Princeton, Louisiana, last month about tuning my S&W M41. The whole pistol. They said some folks ship FFL. Some folks don't.
I reminded him I'm from the Socialist state of Calif. He said it didn't matter.

I think that’s true cause I was going to send the piece of crap ruger lcp2 back to them and he didn’t mention anything about ffl

He may have not said anything, but that's not legal. There is no possible way to receive a firearm in CA, legally, without going through an FFL. I'd love to be corrected if so, but think about it, we can't even get ammo without it going through an FFL. You're saying you can send a firearm directly to a person? Don't get caught!

I don’t know this came straight from ruger customer service she was going to send a printed label for fed x. I just chose not to send it

Could have been like that in the past, but you can't even have ammo sent directly to your home from out of state, or in state for that matter, it's illegal to ship ammo.

Also, I could be wrong, but I did a private transfer recently and I had to meet the seller at the FFL, fill out a DROS form, and wait 10 days, to get the firearm. The only other option was to ship it to the FFL, which the seller was reluctant to do. Since I was going to San Jose more frequently then, and it was at the local FFL I used to buy powder from, I did it. It was a giant inconvenience.

So, it may have been true in the past, but currently I don't think there is any way. If there is I could have saved myself 6 hours on the road to pick it up.

If the gunsmith is a registered FFL and you send directly to them, then yes you can. CA law allows them to return it direct to you as long as the serial number doesn't change.

https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?lawCode=PEN&sectionNum=27105.

So if the firearm is repaired, it's OK. If the firearm is replaced, it needs to transfer to a local FFL for DROS (due to the serial number change).

Of course, you should always verify with the FFL before you ship.

USPS does allow long guns (rifles/shotguns) but not handguns.

This was just last month

Often, the FLL has an agreement with UPS/Fedex and use their account. They send you a shipping label (you still pay for shipping).

Some folks check with their local FFL to handle the shipping (you still pay). Verify you get the handgun back without DROS. If replaced, then roster and DROS come into play.

Or you can use a service like https://www.shipmygun.com/go/ (part of Buds Guns).

If it was a handgun, it would need to be on roster. PPT's are exempt (for now). Regardless, shipping would also incur a transfer fee so that would raise the cost to you by as much as $100 (depending on the FFL) plus the shipping.
