Looking for a "middle ground revolver"

I’m in the market for a practice revolver that offers more presence than a rimfire but is easier to handle than a .38 Special. After visiting several shops, I’m beginning to wonder if this kind of revolver is still out there.

What about a 9mm? Or a 380 ACP? Not a lot of choices, but that may be an option. 38 special is about the most common of revolvers.

I think you're gonna need to provide a bit more detail unless you just want a google search result.

What do you mean by "presence"? Do you plan to use it for self defense? Is this just an esthetic consideration?

Have you actually handled and shot some revolvers and don't want .38spl? By "easier to handle" are you concerned with recoil?

DA? SAO? DA/SA?

What are some models you looked at but didn't consider?

There are revolvers available in .22 Magnum, .327 Federal, and 9mm.

There are several 9mm revolvers available for under $500(although not likely in kommiefornia) and there is a low recoil ammo available from CCI that likely makes shooting one of these super comfortable.
Is this for graduating a student or young adolescent to a more substantial firearm?

Maybe… just get a middle of the road .38 and shoot just target wadcutters…they’re about as light and recoil anemic as anything and, the .38 can be loaded waay up for just about anything. And there are middle of the road defense rounds that anyone can handle. You can always look at some .32 s&w long chambered revolvers, or some .32 H&R chambered revolvers which will shoot the lesser .32 rimmed cartridges and also the more powerful H&Rs’. That being said, you can purchase a .327 Fed mag and still shoot all the lesser .32 cartridges. I would get a .38 myself and look at all the nearly endless versatilities it offers. Cheers👍🏼
