What's up everyone!

I have to admit, I probably spend way too much time with the Penal Code, but honestly, I can’t help it. I just got my hands on a new handgun after that 10-day wait that feels like forever. How about you? What’s the longest you’ve ever had to wait to get a gun? Do you think that anticipation just makes it worse, or does it add to the excitement?

The ten-day wait is certainly a nuisance. My peeve is I buy the gun, pay the tax, then Pay the Excise TAX. Not so bad when getting a Heritage 22-wheel gun. The Browning over and under was a wallet breaker.

I worry that during the wait, something will go wrong in the paperwork.
Back in 1993 I went in search to buy a Colt King Cobra, and found a small shop in San Bruno that said they could get one for me. I did all the paperwork, and waited impatiently for the 15-day wait (at that time) only to go on day 16 to find the owner was never able to find me the gun. Pissed off, I got my money back and went to the SF Gun Exchange (when gun shops were still legal in S.F.) who had one on the shelf, did the paperwork again and went back and got it 15 days later. Yup, total wait time became 31 days.

I have 1 Weatherby rifle in Jail that I pickup on Monday, and I have 2 Weatherbys and a Rem 700 in Jail, coming out on Monday also. There is no limit on long rifles in CA anymore, so I have 4 going through at the same time, one private party, and 3 on DROS. Honestly, private party is not much different here, you still need to wait 10 days... 🤷‍♂️ Everything else I have built myself (per the GCA68), and I have 4 bolt action blanks to build in my retirement (I just retired).

what sucks now is that additional 11% excise tax on all guns and ammo. I want to get the new S&W 1854 in 30-30, but hate to pay 225 tax on it. I even got hit with that tax buying a black powder pistol last year from a company in SoCal.

I was unaware this tax applied to black powder pistols as well?

It's absurd...I picked this rifle up yesterday, it just got out of jail. They actually have to run a background check in California for ammo purchase, but if you can find ammo on the shelf at an FFL, you can buy it from them (after they run a background check), and then on top of it we get the pleasure of having 11% tax added to the already high .0975 tax we already pay, making it an astronomic 20.075% tax...if you pass the background check...this is akin to getting kicked in the teeth when you're on your knees.

Unfortunately, nobody has Weatherby 270 mag ammo in stock...so I won't be able to use it this week...so I stopped by Sportsman's Wharehouse in Rohnert Park. They didn't have any Weatherby 270 mag, but they did have some 300 Win Mag, so that's what we're gonna hunt bear with this coming week, on a piece of property my hunting partner is taking me to see that has a nice size boar he's been getting on his trail cam. We both have a bear tag, and I pick up a Remington 700 chambered in 300 Win Mag, so I bought it...what started out as $61, ends up as $81, after the absurd tax! (and a background check, which should be illegal). To make this all worse, CA passed a bill that goes into effect January 1st, stating we need to have all barrels run through a background check to purchase...the overreach of this administration is unfathomable...

I'm picking up my 60s Remington 700 chambered in 300 Win Mag today...and hopefully hunting on Wed./Thurs. afternoon/evening. Both of us have a bear tag, valid in any zone of CA until the end of December.

PS - this Weatherby 270 Mag is a 1976 Bicentennial model, built in South Gate, CA, where I grew up working for my family's liquor store. Roy used to frequent the gunshop next store, and I graduated in the Bicentennial Class of 1976. This is a special rifle to me, and I wish I could use it for a bear, but don't have any ammo for it just yet until I get some dies and brass!🤞

EDIT: The good news is that I have a box of Peterson brass for 300 Win Mag, and dies already, so I will not be caught in this position again where I need to buy ammo. However, it seems to make sense to have components on hand, as I will for Weatherby 270 Mag. Unfortunately I don't have any brass for Weatherby 257, 270, or 300, nor do I have dies, so it looks like 300 Win Mag is in my future for the time being.

Nice looking rifle.

When I bought my Henry 45-70 at Bass Pro in San Jose, the new ammo background check had just gone into law. I bought three different brands of ammo to see which I would like best. They charged me for each different brand, so I paid three times for three background checks. I've also been turned down because the gun counter guy at Big 5's can't type my info correctly, twice messing up my DMV number. Now the ammo background check is supposed to go to $5. Continuing to kick you in the teeth. I think its been temporarily been blocked, I haven't bought any ammo this year.

I have found bullets there occasionally, not always. Like Sportsman's Warehouse, it's hit and miss, and why more CA stores don't carry more non-lead we can use for hunting, I don't know.

I did the private party purchase from Sportsman's Supply in Campbell, if you know of them. I also have found stuff here before, but this is where the seller knew the owners and wanted to go, so that's what we did. Unfortunately I couldn't find ammo, and I bought 2 boxes of ammo from Grafs, but looked all over my shop (which is a giant mess, as it has all of my furniture in it). I brought back my 6.5 PRC, but not sure where the ammo is, and 300 WM, but I have another box of the Outfitter, I bought. My hunting partner thinks I'll flinch when I shoot it...I'm not so sure. Not like a 50 BMG...just sayin'...I also can shoot a Weatherby 300 Mag, but that's even more recoil than the 300 WM. I know a lot of people that have shot the 300 WM, and I have shot a couple different oines, but they had a brake on them. These rifles don't have brakes, and the 300 WM has an iron sight under the scope.

The 300 WM, it doesn't have a trigger though, but I have it in the 6.5 PRC, which I would rather use if I had ammo.

1962 Weatherby 300 Mag, it doesn't have a scope, these are pics from the seller. I have a box of 180 grain TTSX ammo (Weatherby brand) for it, so could mount a scope and hunt. Will sort out today.

Good news, I found my ammo, and have 1 box of 6.5 PRC, 1 box of Weatherby 300 Mag, and 2 boxes of 300 WM.

I'm taking my 6.5 PRC out this week, and will try to get over to the range tomorrow. This is a Weatherby 307 action (rem clone), which was blueprinted by PTG, McMillan stock, TriggerTech Special Trigger, and a Vortex Gen 1 Viper PST, 2.5x-10x.

I'll be honest, I don't normally shoot factory ammo, but I think it's good to know where my rifle sits using it. This will give me 3 different cartridges, and more than enough to hunt with this year. I would be surprised if I need more than 1 box of the 6.5 PRC, and I have a crap ton on components to load for both 6.5 PRC and 300 WM. I will shoot my handloads and keep this factory ammo stashed away for a rainy day...

These handloads won't be screamers, but they will hopefully group ok. You can see where they were falling in my ladder, towards the bottom, and I should be able to get higher than the 53.4, as that came from the Hodgdon site.

This is the 60s Remington 700 300 WM I have. I will be hunting primarily with the 6.5 PRC above, and this 300 WM this season, until the end of December, and maybe get the Weatherby 300 Mag out to harvest pig or bear.

I know that 10-day wait can feel like an eternity, but congrats on getting that new gun! I can’t wait to hear what you ended up choosing. It’s awesome to have you here!
