Thinking back… which gun did you buy last year that you’re still really excited about?

1976 Weatherby Commemorative Bicentennial 270 Weatherby Mag. One of the nicest firearms I own. EDIT: I just realized, this firearm becomes eligible for a Curio & Relics exemption this year. I have 3 Weatherby long rifles which are Curio and Relic exemption, as all are over 50 years old. 1962 300 Weatherby Magnum, 1970 257 Weatherby Magnum, and 1976 bi-centennial 270 Weatherby Magnum.

I also have an early 60s Remington 300 Win Mag, that is C&R exempt as well.

That said, I'm still excited about the new Ruger 10/22, and haven't had it to the range yet. Just mounted a scope last night. These rings are really for an AR, but I will use them until I get another set of standalone rings. This is a Vortex 2.5-10 Viper PST Gen 1.

That’s just not another rifle, it’s one of those gems you take out of the safe just to appreciate for a moment before even considering shooting it. Having a whole set of Weatherbys that are old enough to qualify along with that early ’60s Remington is a flex that most people can’t match. What a great collection!

Let me be honest with you. Before about a year ago, I didn't have a single bolt action, but I have a lot of parts to build some, I don't have all the parts, but I do have what I need to build a short action, standard bolt face. That action will handle 308/6.5CM/8.6BO, they all use a standard bolt face. I have a pre-fit 6.5CM barrel, and have a Remington 308 stainless take off barrel. For the 8.6BO, I have a 25" 1:3 twist blank I bought from Mos-Tek. My plan was to make 2 x 8.6BO barrels, so 2 x 12" barrels. I have ARs for all of these calibers, but the $64k question is, when will CA remove all the AR nonsense? I don't need anyone looking out for my safety, the 8.6BO is pretty heavy with a 12" barrel. Last night I was looking in a rifle bag that had a a lower and 2 x uppers, one 12" 6.5 Grendel, and a 7.5" 300 blackout with a red dot. The 6.5 Grendel has a LPVO 1-4x on it. This is a 300-400 yard gun. The 300 blackout is a 200-300 yard rifle, easy.

This is to say, I didn't own a single Weatherby until last year when I bought several of them. They are without a doubt the nicest rifles I own, and with my roots to South Gate, they're me, and have special meaning. I have 35 rounds loaded for 270 Weatherby Magnum, of 128 grain McGuire Ballistics CRs.

All that said, the time needs to be right to take a Weatherby out. *IF* I was going after something special, I would take one of the Weatherbys, hands down. Otherwise, I will use the new Weatherby 307 chambered in 6.5 PRC. I believe that will be my main hunting rifle. If I was going big game, I would go 300WSM/300WM or 300 Weatherby Magnum. I have mentioned, one of my bolt action blanks is for a 375 CheyTac. Those are some serious loads, and quite honestly they're overkill for any hunting I will do in CA. I could only imagine needing something like the 375CT if I was to go to Africa. I don't have any plans for that, yet. Currently I have 257 Weatherby Magnum, 270 Weatherby Magnum, and 300 Weatherby Magnum, those are all Curio/Relics, over 50 years old. I also have a early 60s 300WM that I will be converting to a 300WSM. I honestly don't need any more rifles. The Weatherbys and Remington should do, especially because I'm converting the Remington 700 over to a carbon fiber stock. I got the recoil lug last week. It's a whopper, .400" thick. I cherish the Weatherbys. I always wanted one, and now I have 3 nice ones made by Roy. The 257 need a crack repaired in the stock. That one is a 1970, the first year Weatherby moved their manufacturing from Germany to Japan. My 300 Weatherby Mag is German made, it's a '62. The only thing I could imagine better than a Weatherby would be a Parkwest Arms rifle, and I don't see myself spending that type of coin on a rifle. I bought all of the C&R Weatherbys when I sold my house.

I really appreciate how you see some rifles as tools while others deserve a moment of admiration. That’s a balance that many people overlook. Those Weatherbys especially with the South Gate connection are truly special. They’re not the kind of guns you just grab and shoot because you can. Having a few that you genuinely care about is far more rewarding than just filling your safe with things you don’t really value.

I completely agree, the Weatherbys are not ones I will take out all the time, but for something special like a bear, or an elk, I would do that. But for an elk, I would feel safer with 300WM/300WSM. I really want the Bicentennial hanging on the wall of my log home, along with a bear rug hanging on the wall, so having one I shot with the Bicentennial would be XLNT! ;)

You're absolutely right, those rifles are special to me. New rifles are a dime a dozen. The Weatherby 307 is new, but I assembled much of it myself. For those following along, it is not cheaper to build your own firearms, it costs in the end. The Ruger 10/22 is actually the only complete firearm I have purchased, new. The others were receivers at best.

Gunsmithing is something I'm keeping an open mind to, as there are literally no gunsmiths left where I live, there are only 1 or 2 in the entire county, and they are getting too old to work I'm told. I need my shop complete to give gunsmithing a fair assessment.
