Zeroing in

After mounting an optic, how do you typically verify that it’s zeroed in before you consider the setup finished?

That depends on the cailber and purpose

25/100 for my wifes carbine.
50/200 for my main defense rifle.

After locating and leveling the scope and tightening the rings I find something to look at that is at least 250-300 yards away. I look down the bore at the object and move the cross-hairs to match. Then I take it to sight in with ammo. This method has always gotten my rifles shooting onto paper at 100 yards.

I do it slightly different. I shoot really close, then move the target out little by little, until I'm at 100 yards. We have some steel hanging for us to shoot at.

I just keep tightening it up as I move it out.

This is about 80 yards, possibly the 3rd or 4th move out, I start at about 20 yards. I can usually get on paper at that distance. The closer one is the easier it is to get on paper.

If I can remove the bolt, I bore sight it to the target and scope, before I start moving it out.

At 25 yards, I take three shots. Move scope. Take three shots, Cuss, I moved the wrong way, and now off paper. Reclabrate three shots. If I'm close to the center, I go 100 yards. I've never shot glass past100 yards.

Hey, wait a second...I thought I was the only one that cussed...I have centered at 200 in the past, but use 100 most of the time. Only 1" difference between 100 and 200, should still be dead meat in my freezer.
