I don't know if this is really a dilemma or not, but I think I want to change it to better suit me.
I have this 300 Win Mag, it's an early 60s model, prior to Remington using the letter prefix, but I like the rifle as it sits, other than, as you can see, it doesn't have a trigger in it. I ordered a TriggerTech Special trigger for it, which is what it had in it prior to me buying it, and I did buy the trigger from the seller, just that I can't find it as all of my belongings, including my reloading and measuring tools are in my shop, which looks like a giant disaster. LOL I also have an original Jewel trigger that I bought from Bruno Shooters about 20 years ago, when I was toying with the idea of building a bolt action.
The rifle has a Remington BDL bottom metal, but it doesn't let me get the 3rd round in it, easily, so my plan was to single feed this rifle to get it zero'd in. I am not sure where my Remington bolt removal tool is, so can't bore sight it too easily...I do have a BSA bore sighting laser somewhere in the shop...(about 1/2 mile from my rental).
That's a Vortex 2.5-10x Gen1 PST Viper, not a bad scope for hunting at the distance I feel comfortable with, but I would like to get a bigger objective, and higher magnification, just not in my cards to zero this in.
The bottom stock is a takeoff stock from a Fierce Carbon Rogue, with M5 bottom metal, made by Fierce. Unknowing to me, this was a long action, which makes sense as most vendors do in fact use a LA for the 6.5 PRC, as it eliminates a lot of hassle for the user. However, PTG held onto the stock for 24 weeks without even opening the box. To their credit, I'm sure they get a lot of $#!T sent to them, but their CS is sub par, IMO. I don't plan to put a brake on this, but I do have a Boone & Crocket 300 WSM barrel, and putting that on the Remington LA would make sense. As such, I'm looking at swapping all this stuff around, but am going to zero it as it sits on top, by just adding the trigger when it arrives. I have final load testing on my 6.5 PRC, so that can be my main hunting rifle if need be. I was hoping that the 300WM/WSM would be easier on me than the Weatherby 300 Mag, that packs a wallop without a brake. I can thread that myself, or have a gunsmith do that, so it doesn't seem to make sense to remove the sight off the front of the barrel, I can't see it through the scope.
My intention is to be left with 2 rifles, both with carbon stocks, as wood is not as good in the weather. I personally like traditional rifles with wood stocks, so as it sits is actually fine with me, just that I inadvertently have this LA stock, and well, I might be able to take it apart and break something, I'm good at that! LOL I like the idea of swapping things out with magazines also, to have a short distance load, and a longer distance load.
This is the Boone & Crocket barrel, which came from the Remington Custom Shop. My understandings is that B&C makes a CDL version of a Remington, so I'm hoping the barrel is not too bad. It has plenty of room to thread the muzzle. It has the B&C motto on it...a nice touch, IMO. I'm a big Teddy Rosevelt fan, and B&C goes back a long way.
If I can put all of this together, I could take both my 6.5 PRC barrel and this Boone & Crocket barrel to Craig Maraviov, and leave the barrels with him as I use the 300 WM to hunt with until I get the 6.5 PRC barrel back. Short of that I could use a gas rifle. I think I have a 6.5 Grendel 16" barrel, so that wouldn't be overly heavy with a scope. Grendel is the sweet spot on the mini-action, IMO. Grendel will easily take deer and pig out to 400 yards, and I won't be shooting them that far, more like 200 yards. Grendel will drop 'em like a hot rock. But the 300 WM would be more ideal for what I want to use.
