Hunting Pigs...yet becoming a serious problem...

Do you folks buy a pig tag in California? Seems to me it's one of the best deals we have going for us. You can basically hunt pig all year, either sex, and unlimited harvests, reporting each one as you go.

We get that for only $27.xx for 2025, if you're a resident.

I'm looking looking for find a regular area I can harvest pig on public land.

Anyone hunting pig, and if so, what area of California do you hunt them in?

I have a couple areas I wanted to share with others, so they can venture to them if they like.

I'm in North A zone, Lake County to be specific, and there's a place off Highway 20 that I plan to scope out, for lack of a better analogy...

There's a parking area at the Redbud Trail Head, and it's a short trek down to the creek. This area is noted for pigs. This is about 30 minutes from where I live, in Kelseyville. That is in the Cache Creek Wilderness preserve, and is regulated by CDFW.

I have a call in to the Game Warden in Ukiah, trying to find out about North Cow Mountain, but so far no call back after 2 days.

The other area I was targeting is down off Highway 198 out of Coalinga. There's a ton of pigs all through Monterey, SLO, and Coalinga. Where in the Bay Area are you?

I highly reccomend this butcher class, it's a 1 day class that goes for about 8 hours. This is worth it's weight in gold, as they say! Oakstone Outfitters is down in Bradley, CA, just north of SLO.

There was about 6-8 people the day I took the course, and I got to skin 1/2 a pig, and butcher a ham into roasts. The hands on aspect is worth the $300 in itself, and will give you more confidence harvesting a pig.

Best deal on an outfitter for pig...I haven't used these guys, but have been tempted...for $350 they will provide maps on their private land, take you to the area to hunt, and after you harvest one, go back, take it back and butcher it up for you.

Not exactly, speaking for myself. I would pay $350 to have them provide me maps and butcher and package up the meat. That, in itself is probably worth$100-$150, as it would take 3-4 hours of my time. Having them pick it up in a side-by-side seems to be a good value. Not like hiring them to use their dogs. I'd rather do spot-n-stalk.

Catalina Island used to be ( 40 years ago ) the place my friends went for pigs. I was a bird guy and not interested in a peccary.
